Found in the streets of Moscow as a stray, Laika would go on to become the first animal ever in orbit. On November 3, 1957 Sputnik 2 launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome with Laika aboard. Although due to lack of time, the life support systems were unreliable and Laika died in orbit. A monument to her was built in Moscow near the facility where she was prepared for launch. One of the technicians preparing the capsule before final liftoff stated that "after placing Laika in the container and before closing the hatch, we kissed her nose and wished her bon voyage, knowing that she would not survive the flight."
